Gage and his best friend/lover, Jazz, are re-workings of ideas for some pole dancers/prostitutes (I...can't remember...) that Lindsay used to hang out with before she got herself into a better life situation (she still pole dances but can get FAR better clubs than she used to).  Jazz was a victim of the sex industry, as Lindsay was, and Gage and her tended to live in really iffy neighborhoods, and Gage at least has been known to do some iffy things for cash if desperate before.
